In March 2011 the Department of History and Civilisation of the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, will host THATCamp, an important event in the field of Digital Humanities and Digital History organized by several European scholarly institutions. Italian and European Digital Humanists and Historians will be invited to discuss digital scholarship and methods today.

THATcamp (The Humanities and Technology Camp, http://thatcamp.org) is a so-called “un-conference” promoted by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University in Virginia, which is our partner in organising this event for the first time in Italy.

Registered participants for THATCamp Florence will meet in several small and non hierarchic brainstorming sessions, each of which are co-ordinated by a tutor. Wireless Internet will be available, enabling participants to show and discuss specific projects and computing needs, ask technical and methodological questions and share their own experience and knowledge in the Digital Humanities with other participants.

THATCamp ateliers will be informal: there won’t be any papers or long presentations. Instead the focus is on the exchange of idea’s, solutions, tools, software, websites and digital practices in the humanities and social sciences, based on concrete needs. Thus for example, EUI researchers could join other participants in sessions to discuss potential solutions for specific computing issues such as mapping data, creating blog, accessing and managing statistical data, encoding digital documents, managing and storing digital sources, etc.

Participation is open to scholars from Italy and beyond and not limited to EUI members. All participants will meet at the beginning of the Camp on Wednesday March 23 to create the program, consisting of sessions in small groups of 15/20 people which will be coordinated by one or more expert/tutors who are able to speak and understand both English and Italian (and hopefully other European languages). The working language will be English but some Italian only sessions will also be organized for those who are unable to discuss computing issues in English. These Italian sessions will be organized “on demand” and following specific requests from people wishing to register and participate.

THATCamp Florence will be preceded by a BootCamp, consisting of introductory courses in the Digital Humanities & Digital History and provided by one or more teachers. The Bootcamp is sponsored through the generosity of the Mellon Foundation, the Kress Foundation, and the Council on Library and Information Resources in the USA which. They will provide also small individual fellowships for participants. Each participant will know beforehand (www.thatcampflorence.org/programme/) which courses will be provided and by whom and will have to register for each single course she/he would like to attend.

We hope that THATCamp Florence will attract between 150 and 200 people. The number of participants for each session will be limited to 15/20 because of the size of the rooms at the Badia Fiesolana, the seat of the European University Institute. For BootCamp courses, bigger rooms will be used to extend the number of participants.

Registration for THATCamp Florence is necessary and is possible until one week before the start of the Camp. For more information please contact Maria Caterina Cunsolo, Rinascimento Digitale [info@thatcampflorence.org]
