The College of the Liberal Arts at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Research Professor to serve in the position of Assistant or Associate Director for Digital Scholarship, and Director of the Digital Liberal Arts Research Initiative, serving within the Office of Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship (DPS). The start date is flexible but will begin no later than Spring 2020. A Ph.D. is required for this position. This is a fixed-term appointment with excellent possibility of re-funding. For appropriate candidates, an affiliate faculty appointment with the University Libraries is possible. The position will report to the Director of Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship, with a secondary reporting line to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies. DPS facilitates collaborations in the College of the Liberal Arts to pursue digital research projects and to use innovative digital methods in teaching. The Digital Liberal Arts Research Initiative is designed to expand and publicize support for faculty and students who are planning to begin using or increase their use of digital tools and methods (e.g., GIS, text analysis, record digitization and collation, graphical presentation, or statistical analysis) in research. This initiative will support digital research within both the humanities and social sciences, including the College’s new Center for Digital Black Studies. The Assistant/Associate Director will serve as a first point of contact for faculty entering the digital research space, or for those using digital tools who have questions or problems with which they need assistance.
They will develop and formalize procedures and processes to work with faculty seeking support. This might include directing them to resources in the university that already exist, organizing workshops, providing direct individual support, or pulling together a team to assist with particular projects. The Assistant/Associate Director will work cooperatively to integrate and coordinate support resources from multiple units, including but not limited to the University Libraries; the Office of Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship; other College of the Liberal Arts Centers such as the Center for Humanities and Information, the Humanities Institute, and the Center for Social Data Analytics; and other campus organizations such as the Teaching with Learning and Technology group within central IT, or Penn State’s visualization lab.
Providing resources in a coordinated fashion will include developing and publicizing workshops, speakers, and training programs for faculty and students. As the Initiative grows, this position may require additional resources, such as student interns or additional personnel within the Office of Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship. Identifying researcher needs, working with the Digital Liberal Arts Advisory Board to develop a strategic plan to address those needs and expand digital scholarship and research, helping to define unit needs, and coordinating digital research activities are important parts of the position. We expect that the precise day-to-day work of the position will evolve over the next few years as capabilities and connections expand within the College. The successful candidate will have, in addition to the Ph.D., experience supporting or developing a digital project from conception to completion; experience providing digital scholarship instruction and/or research consultation; and broad knowledge of digital scholarship methods in the Humanities and the Social Sciences.
Preferred qualifications include experience with grant development and management, budget management, assessment and strategic planning, and/or student or staff supervision.
Support is available for the candidate’s ongoing active research agenda, if applicable. Teaching opportunities at Penn State may be available, although the position is designed primarily to support research.
Evaluation will include an assessment of the increasing interest and use of digital tools by faculty in their research.
