The Gardens, Libraries and Museums (GLAM) group includes the providers of the major academic services to the divisions, and also departments with responsibilities including, but extending beyond, the immediate teaching and research needs of the University. The Bodleian Libraries
The Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford is the largest university library system in the United Kingdom. It includes the principal University library – the Bodleian Library – which has been a legal deposit library for 400 years; as well as 27 libraries across Oxford including major research libraries and faculty, department and institute libraries.
Together, the Libraries hold more than 13 million printed items, over 80,000 e-journals and outstanding special collections including rare books and manuscripts, classical papyri, maps, music, art and printed ephemera. Department of Special Collections
The Department of Special Collections is under the overall direction of the Keeper, Dr Chris Fletcher. It consists of divisions devoted to Early and Rare Collections, Archives and Modern Manuscripts, University Archives, Reader Services, Conservation and Collection Care, and the Centre for the Study of the Book. Early and Rare Collections, headed by Dr Martin Kauffmann, contains sections devoted to Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts, Rare Books and Printed Ephemera, Maps, and Music.

Job description

Overview of the role
The Bodleian Libraries have received a generous donation from The Polonsky Foundation to support the digitization of medieval manuscripts, mainly in Latin, from the German-speaking lands. The work is being carried out in partnership with the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel. The postholder will be responsible for improving the descriptions of the relevant manuscripts in the online catalogue Medieval Manuscripts in Oxford Libraries (medieval.bodleian.ox.ac.uk), mainly by converting existing information into online form.

Responsibilities
To convert existing descriptions of medieval manuscripts into the online system, in accordance with the TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) P5 Guidelines for Electronic Text Encoding and Interchange (Manuscript Description) and the Bodleian TEI schema
To review and update existing catalogue descriptions to reflect recent research

To participate in educational, promotional and public engagement activities, including the writing of pieces for social media, designed to raise the profile of the digitization project amongst scholars, students, and members of the public
To collaborate with colleagues in Special Collections and BDLSS (Bodleian Digital Library Systems and Services) on all relevant aspects of the digitization project, including the meeting of project milestones set by the team
Other duties
 Participate in a regular Annual Review
 Undertake any necessary training identified
 Comply with health and safety regulations
 Comply with the policies and procedures set out in the Handbook for University Support Staff
 Any other duties that may be required from time to time commensurate with the grade of the job

Selection criteria
Essential
 Proven skills or experience equivalent to those derived from holding a postgraduate degree in some aspect of medieval studies
 High standard of spoken and written English
 Reading knowledge of Latin
 Expertise and interest in the field of medieval manuscripts, including electronic and paper reference works and research resources; experience of using catalogue descriptions
 Aptitude for the use of TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) for the creation of online manuscript descriptions
 Ability and enthusiasm to communicate with a broad range of people about medieval manuscripts and the digitization project, including scholars, students, and the public
 Ability to work independently; co-operative attitude to working with colleagues
 High standard of personal organization and administrative competence; attention to detail; an ability to work to deadlines
Desirable

Reading and speaking knowledge of German
 Experience of working with TEI-XML or other mark-up languages
 Experience of manuscript digitization
