Applications are invited for a new post of Senior Data Scientist in the MRC Epidemiology Unit within the University of Cambridge.

The post will play a key role in the development of InterConnect, a European FP7 funded project that will create a network for research to explain the difference in risk of diabetes and obesity between population. The core of the network will be a technology platform that provides the infrastructure to generate common format (i.e. harmonised) datasets across participating epidemiological studies and to allow federated analysis of these datasets without the need to physically pool data in a central location.

The successful applicant will be expected to have experience of PHP, MySQL and standard web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and Ajax. Strong understanding of SQL and basic statistical processing are also pre-requisites. Future developments in the project may lead on to wider use of programming techniques using advanced programme languages such as java and also distributed computer systems such as Cassandra and Hadoop. The role-holder will also have a good appreciation of the scientific needs that shape the technology platform and be able to form an effective communication bridge between disciplines to provide common understanding and direction to the technical goals of the project.
